Give people power over their capital
FairPensions has responded to this morning's speech on employee ownership by the Deputy Prime Minister. In reaction to Nick Clegg's analysis that ‘too few people have capital', campaigners at FairPensions have highlighted the fact that millions of people already have a stake in the capital markets but aren't able to be active owners.
Catherine Howath, CEO of FairPensions, said:
"Millions of pension savers already have their money invested in companies across the country but remain disconnected and disempowered from their stake in the economy."
Ms Howarth went on to call on institutional investors to be more accountable to the public:
"The big investors must be more accountable to the people whose capital they take care of. Savers should be able to assess and input into the decisions made by their fund managers. This would allow the millions of people who are already invested in British companies to be part of a more responsible capitalism"
